Also, listening to music means that they are involved in music and the magazine would appeal to them. The respondents also state the fact they like top socialize and they have strong social skills with others, this is how trends go viral and so presenting this in a popular music magazine that is appropriate for the 16-21 age range

Analysis of Magazines

The Fly
The front cover of this magazine appeals the specific target audience, that are aged 16 to 25. It tends to focus more on one genre which is indie so the magazine appeals to more indie fans. The colours that are evidently shown are orange, blue and black. Magazines that are aimed at an older audience tend to have a maximum of 3 colours. This makes it look more authentic and attracts the correct target audience where as younger readers may be attracted to a variety of colours and a lot of things on the front cover, as well as looking at a different genre. This front cover in minimalistic and only features a long shot of a artist as well as a masthead "THE FLY"" and main heading "KING KRULE" in bold to stand out to the reader and is attractive to the target audience, there is not a lot going on in the front cover. On the bottom of the page, there is a banner which gives a bit of insight as to what's in the magazine and features it includes. The background of the magazine includes light colours that contrast the oranges so it makes them stand out more.

Analysis of Contents Page

In the contents page for The Fly, it has a group shot of a band that is featured in the magazine. This give the reader a view of who is included in that issue. It clearly displays the date at the top of the page in a vibrate colour so it stands out. The positioning of the artists shows to the reader that the magazine is for the younger audience and appeals to the younger generation, it compliments the idea of the magazine's music genre and the target audience being 16-25 years. The font of the contents on the bottom third of the page is different to the whole magazine, this intrigues the audience because there is something varied on the pages. The design of the contents page is simplistic, this indicates the age of the magazine because it wouldn't appeal to the younger audience.

Analysis of double page spread

The example of a double page spread in The Fly has minimal colour and is very elementary. In the first and second thirds of the magazine, there is a print of the band that has being drawn on which shows creativity within the band, it coveys to the reader that the band produce their own music, and have individuality, but also because the image covers most of the double page spread, it emphasises they have a high significance and have a bigger importance in the magazine. The initial heading for the page is simple and bold to the reader, it is clearly stated in the left-hand third of the page, this is because people read from left to right so at first glimpse, they look at the image which is the most important feature, then the writing.

Analysis of Prog magazine front cover

The front cover of Prog is specifically designed for a certain age group, mainly 16-25 years. The reason for this is because of the substantial amount of colour in the front cover, it shows there is a lot going on in the magazine, this gives insight as to what the magazine is about and the fact that the reader wont get bored because of its amount of content. The masthead "PROG" is clearly stated on the top third of the magazine in bold white lettering, this makes it look more superior to the rest of the magazine, however the images included in the magazine front cover overlap the masthead so the reader is drawn to the imagery and the bands in the centre. The band's name is presented in a bold colour so the reader is drawn into the middle. There are other intricate images and detail on the outsides of the magazine, this is so the reader can take time to look at them and then interests them into buying the magazine because its full of different things, linking back to the magazine having a good amount of music information. The background has a contrast of dark and light colours, this may give the impression of the magazine being suited for every genre and not just suited for a certain music group. There are no cover lines presented on the front cover, it is all images and illustrations which is purposely used for pure aesthetic reasons.

Analysis of contents

The heading for the contents page is the same font as the front cover, and the same colour just a different tone as the masthead on the front cover. The reasoning for this is to indicate that the contents is linked to the front cover and is located at the top of the page (which is also the same as the masthead. However the masthead is a bigger than the heading which emphasis the point that the magazine has already been branded and doesn't need to be shown to the reader again. The grab line "if it in there, its on here" is evident under the heading and conveys the message to the correct target audience that everything they need to know is in the magazine which instantly interests them because it connotes to everything being in one place. The position of it is also at the top of the pages because its introduced at the start so its persuasion from the beginning. The content titles are presented in bold red lettering so it stands out to the reader, it also makes it easier for the reader to find what their looking for within the magazine. The main image on the contents page covers half of the contents page which emphasises the bands and, music included in the magazines is creative and unique; similar to the image. The colour scheme of the contents page is cool colours except for the use of red for the content titles, this to connotes to the magazine being calming.

Analysis of Contents page
On the contents page of Prog, the heading isn't placed at the top of the page however, it is the largest font on the page to draw the attention to the heading, which is also in red to emphasis the importance of the heading on the page. Corresponding to the use of red for heading, the quote next to the image of the band is also in the same colour, this signifies to the audience that the quote is also important and it draws you into reading it. The structure of the double page spread is that the top half is sectioned with a greyscale image of the band and the quote. The reason why the publisher has created this is because it's more aesthetically pleasing and unique from to show that 'Prog' has originality. The page layout is more in quarters rather than thirds, and the writing is placed in the last quarter, to suit the image and the heading.

Mojo Analysis Front Cover

The front cover of Mojo has a large masthead that is in large letters and a bold font, it has a 3D effect that makes it look a lot more high-caliber compared to the rest of the cover, the colour choice for the masthead contracts against the darker background of her hair, and has been covered by a slogan which enables the reader to understand what the magazines about "the music magazine." The background and main image of the magazine is a woman with dark hair and minimal makeup/natural. it is a close-up of her face which the masthead covers which shows that its has more significance as well as the cover lines also overlapping, this justifies the point of the information being more important than the image and the fact that MOJO focuses more on writing and text rather than imagery an photos. The images of her face however is placed in the middle of the cover so it draws the audience in to her face. The skyline is contains two more bands that are featured in the magazine, as well as being linked to a puff-signifying the fact that the magazines contains a free CD. This persuades the audience to buy the magazine as it is placed in the corner in a bold colour that differs from the rest of the cover. The magazine cover lines have been placed around the centre so it doesn't cover the main image, so the main focus is still on the woman. They are written in all different fonts to indicate they are creative and don't just stay to the same font, and conveys to the reader there I always something different. The colours that the cover lines are written in the cool toned blue which is corresponding to the main theme of the cover, furthermore, some of them are bigger than others such as the '2016' and the main artists featured in the magazine. Everything within the cover lines contains details about the information that is inside the magazine which also gives insight to the reader about what they will see. This makes it more appealing to the specific target audience and they link to the genre in which MOJO specializes in.

Mojo Analysis of Contents

The contents of MOJO is presented over two pages and contains a variety of information and images that appeal to the target audience. The structure of the magazine doesn't have a specific layout. The masthead is in the same font as the masthead on the cover. However it is not as big as the font on the cover, in which signifies that the masthead on the cover is more important, and that the magazine is branded and doesn't need to be established to the audience again. Additionally, it is located on the top of the page and is the first thing the audience are attracted to looking at. The sub-heading is placed under the masthead on the contents page, that reinforces where the magazine is based. The main image for the contents page is also the background, it is in black and white to fit the dark theme that is continued from the cover, there is a re-occurring theme of using greyscale images and bold fonts. However, there are other images placed on the second page of the contents that are not in black and white so it keeps the reader interested because there is some subtle colour. The main use of colour throughout the contents pages are the sidebars to make it clearer for the audience to find what they're looking for. The overall layout for the contents page is set out where most of the information is on the right hand page and the left only has the masthead, the main image and limited content.

MOJO Double Page Spread

The MOJO double page spread has unique features that other magazine doesn't usually have; for example the page doesn't not have a masthead with indicated that the magazine has already being branded and this doesn't have to be justified continuously. The structure of the magazine is set out in columns with images layered in the centre of the first page and the top of the second, this conveys that the magazine is clearly well presented and structured clearly to the target audience. In addition there is no main image within the pages, some are bigger than others there are also two bigger in which are the same, establishing that there are no superiors, and nothing is conveyed as better than the others, however the artist and music that the article focuses on, the images for these are bigger to make it understandable to the reader.  The mise-en-scene for the images are quite structured and are obviously taken on a shoot, this has been used to highlight how popular they are because the photos are professionally taken, and are in studios and on shoots quite a lot. The clothes that the artists and musicians are wearing is quite smart to indicate that they take their passion seriously and what they do is important to them. Conversely, some of the images are I black and white, to state the type of genre as well as having a mixture to keep the audience interested. The people in the images are happy which indicates they are happy with the photos to be staged and shows they are passionate about the music they produce, resulting in the audience being interested also. An image has been used in the top corner like a puff but contains no writing like a vinyl to state the genre of the magazine, which connotes to the magazine contains information that would suit people who prefer Indie music, this is continued on the second pages to show repetition and consistency. There is also a sidebox on the right hand side of the second page with a heading of what else is in the issue, this attracts he reader into purchasing the magazine, because it may contain things they're interested in. Most of the font is in black to show sophistication, but some if the fonts such as the heading in the side box is in red, which is vibrant and bright that attract the eye, as well as the grab quote. The publishers want this to be the first thing they read because it tends to interest them to read the full article.

Introduction

Hello,
This is my AS Media Studies Blog where I am going to attach my coursework around the subject of a new music magazine. The work that will be included in my blog will be split into 3 sections:
-Research and planning
-Construction of the magazine
-Evaluation
The mark will be out of 100. Before we start the main media coursework, there will be a prelimary task which include using DTP (Desktop Publishing) and Photoshop to create a front cover of a school magazine featuring a medium close-up image, appropriate text and masthead. I will also produce a DTP mock-up of the contents page and the general grasp of the programme which will include at least 8 photos. Leading up to the main task of creating a music magazine that it suitable for a certain age range.

For my Research within the task, I will be analyzing textual and the layout aspects of 3 covers, 3 contents pages and 3 double page spreads. To gain more research for my target audience I will carry out market surveys of what music magazines are published in the UK and who publishes the (which ones the most popular). As evidence I will take pictures of how many/what music magazines are published. This will be primary research that will include questionnaires, surveys and interviews; initially I will have enough information to create a reader profile with statistics on readers tastes.

Within the planning section, it will be the organization of actors/models, locations/sets, props, lighting and setting. I will pitch a document outlining magazine, the leadership, style and contents, as well as flat plans and style sheets of the pages and draft copy of my article/magazine. In addition to this, I will also use effective presentation of material and have an effective time use.
